Derek Mortland
Derek Mortland is a musician, composer, and arranger whose mission is to inspire creativity through musical and rhythmic experiences. He works with learners of all ages in both school and community-based residency projects, aiming to foster a greater appreciation of music and each individual's creative potential. His residencies involve integrating local and state history into song through creative writing, which enhances students' knowledge of their past, communication skills, cooperative work abilities, and appreciation for music. Derek’s artistic journey spans a wide array of influences and genres, from rock bands in his early teens to jazz, heavy metal, and world music compositions that have been nominated for Native American Music Awards. A 1997 motorcycle accident that left him permanently paralyzed has deeply influenced his artistic vision and appreciation for life.

Despite the challenges, Derek has continued to inspire others through his music and teaching. Mostly self-taught, he has been a teaching artist with VSA arts of Ohio since 2004 and received a Teaching Artist Fellowship from VSA arts International in 2008-2009. He is part of the Ohio Artists Presenters Network and has received numerous grants and awards, including the 2009 Ohio Governor's Arts Award for Individual Artist. Derek's approach incorporates a broad range of skills from various disciplines, including martial arts, brain-based learning styles, and theatrical techniques, making his teaching deep and well-rounded for all audiences.
